D.O. Valdeorras

Petín village, Valdeorras valley, province of Ourense, in the western part of the D.O.

Field blend, predominantly Mencía, with small percentages of indigenous red varieties: Garnacha Tintorera, Mouratón (Juan García), Gran Negro, and Sousón.

Single vineyard farmed on the south bank of the Sil River on 30% slopes. Northwest-facing.

FOUNDING YEAR: 2004

Dry-farmed bush vines (gobelet). Bodegas Avancia practices sustainable, artisanal viticulture, minimizing treatments as much as possible, with a preference for contact fungicides. No herbicides are used.

Slate soils mixed with small amounts of quartz.

Mediterranean climate with an Atlantic influence. Very cold winters and very warm hot summers.

Hand-harvested into 10 kg boxes for transport to the winery. Cluster selection at the winery, followed by pre-fermentation maceration and fermentation in neutral open 600 L French barrels. One third of the production underwent whole-cluster maceration and fermentation; two thirds were made traditionally, destemmed (but not crushed). Malolactic fermentation in used 225 L French barrels, followed by 8 months of ageing.

8 months in used barrels (second to fifth use).

Carballedo is a small, single 0.4 ha plot of interplanted varieties west of O Barco de Valdeorras. Located on the south side of the river and facing north, it is a steep-slope vineyard planted on poor slate soils that produce a very elegant, polished Valdeorras Mencía style, with unusually refined tannins and strong color concentration in the glass.
